Is WoW Forever layering a problem?

Short answer: WoW Forever layering wasn't a problem for me. In the beta it took me from 25 people waiting for one mob to one or two waiting for it, and it never affected me negatively. Blizzard says layering is staying for launch on 4 November, with two fixes: keeping you with the people you rode a boat or zeppelin with, and stopping big groups getting split up going in and out of capital cities (Output Lag, 23 October).

What is layering in WoW Forever?

Layering in WoW Forever is the game running several copies of the same area at once and spreading players across them, so one spot doesn't end up with 50 people in it. You get a warning, then the world around you refreshes and you're in a different copy, with different players. I'd been calling them shards. The actual name is layering, and it's the same idea WoW Classic used.

Did layering affect me in the WoW Forever beta?

Layering never affected me negatively in the WoW Forever beta. I think it's really good. I was going from 25 people waiting for one mob to one or two waiting for one mob, which is the whole point of it.

I can see how it annoys people, because there's a timer on it. But I think it's more my proactive nature that meant I didn't notice anything.

How long is the WoW Forever layer timer?

The WoW Forever layer timer was 5 minutes in my beta games: a message tells you the world around you will refresh, and you can do it straight away instead of waiting. Most of the time I accepted it the minute it popped up, just so I wouldn't have to face a 5-minute timer and then try to keep track of it. Output Lag's 23 October report puts the warning at three minutes, so the launch version may be shorter than what I had.

What is Blizzard fixing in WoW Forever layering before launch?

Blizzard is fixing two things before launch, according to a statement from Clay Stone, WoW Forever's associate production director, on 23 October:

Stone also said "there will always be some amount of layering" on Forever's servers, and that Blizzard expects to keep improving it "through launch and beyond" (Output Lag). So it isn't going away.

What isn't fixed in WoW Forever layering yet?

Two layering problems from the beta haven't been promised a fix. Zones next to each other can sit on different layers, so you can switch layer just by crossing a border, as players found between Dalaran and Silverpine Forest and between Tirisfal Glades and the Ruins of Lordaeron. And when someone leaves a group, they move to a new layer and so does the group leader. Lead designer Tim Jones called the work "incremental steps" on the official podcast (Seramate, 17 October).

Will layering be a problem at WoW Forever launch?

It'll be busy, whatever happens. The first starting levels are going to be a grind because of the number of people, and that's exactly where layering helps. If you're still stuck waiting on a mob with other people, party up with them and kill it together (what time WoW Forever launches).
